This Privacy Policy explains what personal data Birdey collects, why it is collected, and how it is handled. Birdey is a mobile application for learning to identify birds through a game-like experience.
1. Who We Are

2. Data We Collect
- Account information – When you sign in with Google, Apple, or email/password we receive your display name (if provided), email address, and a unique user ID from the identity provider.
- Profile data – Your chosen Birdey username, level, experience points, titles, and profile picture (if set).
- Learning progress & collection – Bird identification mastery scores, round history, streaks, season and league statistics, your card collection, and in-game currency balances (feathers) stored to personalise your experience.
- Social data – Your friends list, gift notifications, and wishlist entries if you use the social features.
- Subscription status – Whether you hold an active Birdey Pro subscription, managed via RevenueCat.
- Push notification token – A device token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) used to deliver push notifications, e.g. gifts received or in-game events. You can disable notifications in the app settings or your device settings at any time.
- Usage data – Crash reports and performance data (Firebase Crashlytics) and anonymised gameplay analytics such as screen views and game events (Firebase Analytics), used solely to improve app stability and gameplay. We do not collect the advertising ID, and analytics data is never used for advertising or ad personalisation.
If you sign up for the closed beta on our website, we also store the email address you submit so we can contact you about beta access. You can request deletion of it at any time.
3. How We Use Your Data
- To create and maintain your account and sync progress across devices.
- To operate leaderboards, the weekly league, seasons, world-first records, and social gifting features.
- To verify your subscription entitlement and unlock Birdey Pro features.
- To send in-app and push notifications relevant to your account (e.g. gifts received, streak reminders, in-game events). Notifications can be turned off at any time.
- To diagnose crashes, understand how the game is played, and improve app performance and learning features.
We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.
4. Third-Party Services
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging, Analytics, Crashlytics) – Privacy policy
- RevenueCat – Subscription management and receipt validation. Privacy policy
- Google Sign-In – Federated identity provider. Privacy policy
- Apple Sign-In – Federated identity provider. Privacy policy
- Google Gemini AI – Used server-side to generate bird identification feedback. Your bird answers are sent to the Gemini API to produce personalised feedback; no personally identifying information is included in these requests.
5. Data Retention
Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Delete Account inside the app. Deletion removes your Firestore profile, mastery data, friends list, notifications, uploaded images, and RevenueCat subscriber record. Firebase Authentication is deleted last, completing the process within seconds.
6. Your Rights (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Request erasure of your data (use the in-app deletion feature or contact us).
- Object to or restrict processing of your data.
- Lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (in Denmark: Datatilsynet).

7. Children
Birdey is designed for users of all ages. When creating an account for a child, a parent or legal guardian must check the "This account is for a child" option during signup. Child accounts automatically enable Kids Mode, which restricts access to the in-app store and settings behind a parental math gate.
We do not knowingly collect more personal data from children than is necessary to provide the service (email address and gameplay progress). Parents or guardians may review, correct, or request deletion of their child's data at any time by contacting us at support@birdsodyssey.com or using the in-app account deletion feature (accessible through the parental gate).
8. Security
All data is stored in Google Firebase infrastructure protected by industry-standard security controls. Connections between the app and our backend use HTTPS/TLS encryption. Access to personal data is restricted to the account owner via Firebase Authentication.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be announced in the app. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
